Steak, Greens + Mash

Steak Greens & Mash

Carissa Mason
Yep! Steak and mash my friends – it still has a place in my heart and on the table. This delivers a really decent serve of protein and iron, so if you’re struggling with both, don’t dismiss this nostalgic fave.

Ingredients

  • 800 g rib fillet steaks (4 x 200 gram steaks)
  • 2 potato large
  • 1/4 head cauliflower
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 brown onion
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1 bunch broccolini
  • 500 g green beans
  • 2 carrot large
  • Woolworths Mushroom gravy optional {35 cals per serve}
  • sea salt & pepper to season and taste

Instructions

  • Pop your steaks on a plate and season well with salt and pepper. Set aside, steak is best cooked at room temp.
  • Chop up your potatoes, cauliflower, peeled onions and skin your garlic cloves. Place these ingredients in a pot full of water and boil them until you can easily pop a fork through a potato. Drain the water out, then add in the 1/4 cup milk and mash this with the potato, onion and garlic together. Season with salt and pepper as desired. You can pop this in a bowl and cover it with glad wrap to re-heat it to serve if you like.
  • Chop up the broccolini, carrot and beans and add them to a separate sauce pan of water. Blanch these briefly and don’t over cook them.
  • For the steak: everyone is different here, but I cook on a gas weber. So if this is your jam, then cook the steak to your liking. Other wise, use a HOT, non stick fry pan.
  • Once everything is cooked, serve each plate with a piece of steak, some veggies and then a serve of mash on the side. If you’re having mushie gravy, you can add this now {heated of cause}

Notes

If you’re capable as a kitchen whizz, you will be able to most likely do all all of these things at once and just serve up. But for those of you not as confident in the cooking space, cook your mash and veggies first and set them aside and then cook your steak OR cook your mash first and cook your veggies whilst cooking your steak. You can also your other half to cook the meat whilst you do the veggies and mash.
